Changing your name after marriage is a significant decision that carries both personal and legal implications. It's a way to signify your new chapter together, but it also involves updating a lot of important documents.
Did you know that about 70% of newlyweds in the US decide to change their last names after getting married? This trend is quite similar in NJ and NYC, reflecting a common tradition that many couples still cherish.
Preparing for the Name Change
Before diving into the name change process, gather all necessary documents. Here’s what you’ll need:
Marriage Certificate: Obtain several certified copies from the NJ Department of Health or the NYC Office of the City Clerk.
Birth Certificate: Some agencies may require this.
Identification: Your current driver’s license or passport.
Creating a checklist of all the places that need to be notified about your name change can be immensely helpful. This list typically includes the Social Security Administration, DMV, banks, insurance companies, and utility providers.
Changing Your Name with the Social Security Administration
The first step in legally changing your name is updating your Social Security information. Here's how:
Form SS-5: Fill out the Social Security Administration's application for a Social Security card, which you can download from their website. Visit SSA.gov and enter your zip code to find the address of the NY SSA office closest to you.
Submit the Form: You can either mail the completed form along with your marriage certificate, birth certificate, and current ID to your local Social Security office or submit it in person. Certain parts of NYC, like Queens and Brooklyn, don't allow applicants to mail in, so check with SSA beforehand.
Processing Time: For mail-in applications, it typically takes about 2-4 weeks to receive your new Social Security card, so plan accordingly.
How much does it cost: It's 100 percent free to apply for a name change on your social security card in New York & NJ and throughout the US
Updating Your Name on Your Driver’s License
Once you’ve updated your Social Security information, the next step is to change your name on your driver’s license.
New Jersey DMV:
Documents Needed: Bring your current driver’s license, your new Social Security card, your marriage certificate, and proof of address.
Process: Visit your local NJ MVC office to submit these documents. They will take a new photo and issue your updated license.
Fees and Processing Time: The fee for a name change if you have to go through the courts in New Jersey is $250+. The process can take anywhere from 1 day to 6 months, depending on the county & courthouse where you file.
New York DMV:
Documents Needed: Bring your current driver’s license, your new Social Security card, your marriage certificate, and proof of address.
Process: Go to your local NYC DMV office to submit the necessary documents. They will take a new photo and issue your updated license.
Fees and Processing Time: The fee in NYC is $12.50, and processing typically takes about 2 weeks.
Notifying Financial Institutions
Now, it’s time to update your name with your bank and credit card companies.
Banks and Credit Cards:
Documents Required: Most banks will need a copy of your marriage certificate and your updated ID.
Process: Visit a local branch to submit your documents and request the name change. Some banks may allow you to do this online or by mail.
Insurance Providers:
Health Insurance: Contact your health insurance provider with your marriage certificate and updated Social Security information to update your records.
Auto and Home Insurance: Similarly, notify your auto and home insurance providers about your name change, providing the necessary documentation.
Updating Your Name with Employers and Government Agencies
Employers:
Human Resources: Provide your HR department with a copy of your marriage certificate and updated Social Security card to update your name on payroll, benefits, and other records.
Government Agencies:
Voter Registration: Update your voter registration with your new name through your local election office.
US Passport: To change your name on your passport, you’ll need to complete Form DS-82 (if your passport is less than one year old) or Form DS-5504 (if it's more than a year old). Include your marriage certificate and current passport.
Final Steps and Considerations
Social Media and Online Accounts:
Updating Profiles: Don’t forget to update your name on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as any online accounts and subscriptions.
Professional Licenses:
Process: If you have any professional licenses (e.g., medical, legal), check with your licensing board for specific name change requirements. This often involves submitting a name change form along with your marriage certificate.
Conclusion
Changing your name after marriage in NJ and NYC involves several steps, but with a clear plan and the right documents, it can be a smooth process. Start early, keep track of your progress, and soon you'll have all your documents updated with your new name. Share your experiences or ask questions in the comments below, and if you found this guide helpful, please share it with other newlyweds!
